This role is classified as Level 3 role under SBS Australia's current Enterprise Agreement with a base salary of $89,140 - $96,482. The successful applicant will be offered remuneration that is commensurate with their skills and experience and in alignment with this framework.
We have 2 x ongoing, hybrid, positions based in Sydney or Melbourne. The role is organised through shifts across mornings, evenings, day shifts and weekends.
As a rostered shift worker, additional shift penalty payments may apply for work performed outside of ordinary hours, including weekends and public holidays, as per the SBS Enterprise Agreement (EA). SBS may also require you to work reasonable overtime, where overtime will be paid at applicable rates in accordance with the EA. Shift patterns may change over time depending on operational needs.
The Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a passionate and driven Digital Journalist/Editor to join SBS News to write content for the SBS News website, app and Apple News.

This role will see you:
Rostered into a mix of reporter and digital editor shifts
In reporting shifts, you’ll be pitching and writing original articles, including daily and breaking news coverage, explainers, case study-led stories, and features
In digital editor shifts you’ll be selecting and commissioning daily news stories for the website, covering breaking news, writing and publishing live blogs, curating the SBS News website and optimising content
Conduct thorough news gathering with a strong awareness of national and international news and audience trends
Select strong images or commissioning graphics to accompany stories
Bring forward ideas for innovative coverage
Send app alerts, optimising content and subbing content where required
Using data and analytics tools to help inform editorial choices
Collaborate with members of the broader SBS News team to help make the most of our newsgathering and newsroom skills in daily coverage
About you
This role is ideal for you if:
You’re a confident and creative writer with a strong eye for detail and the angles that matter to our audience
Enjoy working in a news environment where every day is different: one day you’re working on breaking news, and another doing a deep-dive into a key issue or story
Have a keen interest in news, and ability to manage priorities in breaking news environments
Enjoy sourcing and conducting compelling interviews to contribute to our distinctive coverage
Have an understanding of media law, flawless subbing, and strong headline writing skills
Be committed to maintaining our editorial integrity and maximising our publishing reach
Have demonstrated experience as a digital journalist for news titles
Have demonstrated digital skills, including SEO, headline writing and writing for digital audiences
You should also bring:
A keen interest in what’s happening in the world to develop storytelling in new and innovative ways to reach and engage wider audiences.
A strong understanding and knowledge of national and international affairs
A passion for providing news for all Australians
A hunger to understand and share new developments and trends in journalism and digital media.
Enthusiasm to collaborate across the newsroom to create unique and distinctive content that meets deadlines.
News happens around the clock and you should be willing and able to undertake hours that involve early mornings, day shifts, evenings and weekends. We do not staff our news desks overnight.
