SBS is seeking a General Counsel, responsible for leading our Legal Division and providing legal advice to the corporation.

The successful candidate will be a highly effective and accomplished senior lawyer with substantial exposure to relevant legislation, including media law, regulation, copyright, public sector law, employment and administrative law.  You should hold or be eligible to obtain a NSW Practising Certificate, and be able to design frameworks and strategies in response to legislative and operational needs of SBS.

Reporting to the Director of Corporate Affairs, the General Counsel is responsible for leading a team to deliver high quality legal services and support to the SBS network, as follows:

  • Delivery of legal advice to the Managing Director and all Divisions of SBS and its subsidiaries with an emphasis on media and communications law (including defamation), administrative law, copyright and intellectual property, procurement and privacy, policy matters;
  • Negotiation, drafting and management of commercial transactions;
  • Provision of advice to enable SBS to comply with all applicable and relevant legislation, including the Special Broadcasting Service Act, PGPA Act, Archives Act, Privacy Act, Freedom of Information Act, etc;
  • Management of compliance processes and regulatory requirements as required, such as those arising under the Modern Slavery Act;
  • Management of litigation and other contentious matters, including representing the interests of SBS in court.  Conduct litigation or, where necessary, brief and assist counsel;
  • Direct responsibility for, and involvement in, more complex and high-profile matters as required, including provision of advice directly to the Managing Director and Board and leading negotiations on significant commercial transactions.

    This role is a key leadership position, and the successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to manage a highly engaged and experienced team of professionals.  We’re after an exceptional leader in the field with the proven ability to enable and empower team members in order to drive the highest levels of employee engagement and input.

    As a member of the SBS Executive team, the role requires a deep understanding of the rapidly changing Australian media landscape, excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
