Brooke Sutton-Smithers is an Applications Analyst at SBS Technology team, which supports the Enterprise Systems that keep television and radio broadcasting alive. Brooke started at SBS in the Autumn of 2018, where she provided National Media Sales systems support.
Brooke’s career journey proves that there’s no single path into tech. From hospitality to broadcast technology at SBS, her story is a reminder that curiosity and a passion for people can take you further than you think.

Tell us about your career journey and what your current role is at SBS?
My career path wasn’t exactly straightforward. I started in hospitality while studying Media, Culture, and Communications at Macquarie University, where I discovered my passion for connecting with people and supporting others. Knowing that the values of SBS strongly aligned with my own, I applied to be an administrative assistant at SBS after graduation. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the role, but I received positive feedback that motivated me to apply for other roles at SBS. A few months later, I joined the Media Sales Team in a Systems Support role, where I stayed for seven years. I now work as an Applications Analyst in the Enterprise Systems Support Team, and I absolutely love it!
What inspired you to pursue a career in technology?
I have always been drawn to technology, but my real motivation comes from the people, the incredible individuals behind the scenes. My curiosity about how things work, combined with my desire to help others, has evolved into a passion for problem-solving. Technology isn’t just a tool; it’s a space where I can connect in a meaningful way with myself and others.
You’ve worked on some incredible projects. Can you share one that you’re particularly proud of?
Over almost a decade at the company, I’ve had the opportunity to work on many different projects. I would say that launching SBS World Movies and SBS World Watch are among my proudest achievements. It’s not every day you contribute to large-scale projects that reach millions of people. Being part of these projects from start to finish and working across different divisions to contribute to channels that serve so many unique communities is incredibly special.
You have held different roles and worked on various projects at SBS. What key challenges and learning opportunities have shaped your growth and strengthened your skills and expertise?
My growth at SBS has arisen from forging connections, embracing learning, and daring to step up. Opportunities don’t come to those who wait; I’ve actively sought mentors and bravely taken risks. One of the biggest challenges I face is balancing project delivery and everyday tasks while prioritising my personal development. Carving space for myself has been pivotal in my journey, revealing that career paths are often not obvious, yet they unfold when you stay curious and take the initiative.
What attracted you to SBS, and what keeps you motivated to stay here?
SBS drew me in because it is such an iconic part of the Australian media landscape. Its community purpose resonated with me deeply. Throughout the years, I have built strong connections and formed lasting friendships. There have always been opportunities for growth, and many people have supported my ambitions along the way.
What advice do you have for aspiring women interested in building their careers in technology?
My advice is to embrace curiosity and continuous learning. Technology is constantly evolving. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or explore beyond your comfort zone. Connect with like-minded individuals who will support your growth. Seek and pursue opportunities. Be the difference! Don’t underestimate your abilities—believe in your skills and don’t hesitate to apply for opportunities. There will be challenges, but persistence, adaptability, and resilience are crucial. Great mentors and sponsors can make a world of difference. Your voice matters, so back yourself and what you can bring to the conversation.
