This role is classified as Level 2 role under SBS Australia's current Enterprise Agreement (with a base salary range of $68,239 - $79,000). The successful applicant will be offered remuneration that is commensurate with their skills and experience and in alignment with this framework.
The role is organised through Monday-Friday shifts, and may involve early mornings, evenings and weekend work depending on business needs.
As a rostered shiftworker, additional shift penalty payments may apply for work performed outside of ordinary hours, including weekends and public holidays, as per the SBS Enterprise Agreement (EA). SBS may also require you to work reasonable overtime, where overtime will be paid at applicable rates in accordance with the EA. Shift patterns may change over time depending on operational needs.

The Role
SBS News and Current Affairs is looking for a passionate and driven Audio Journalist to join our team in Canberra.
We’re seeking a political enthusiast with strong editorial instincts and a talent for making politics relevant and accessible to a broad audience. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an innovative team, delivering impactful audio journalism across news bulletins, explainers and feature podcasts.
Working within our News Audio team, you’ll help shape our political coverage for podcast audiences, with a strong focus on journalism that reflects SBS’s Charter and our commitment to accuracy, impartiality and balance.
This role will see you:
Pitching, writing, voicing and producing political news and feature content for audio news bulletins and feature podcasts
Breaking down complex political issues into accessible, engaging stories with clear audience value
Covering breaking news and need-to-know political stories for audio audiences
Applying audience data insights to shape story development and production
Collaborating with colleagues across SBS teams
Contributing to the evolution of SBS audio products, bringing forward fresh ideas
About You
Ideally, you will:
Be a resourceful and self-motivated journalist with demonstrated audio reporting and production experience
Bring a strong interest in Australian politics and a desire to make political reporting more engaging and relevant to all Australians
Be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment to news deadlines, with solid editorial judgment and attention to detail
Have strong writing, producing voicing skills, with a commitment to balance and accuracy
Demonstrate experience publishing to digital platforms and optimising content for performance (SEO, tagging, headlines, etc.)
Be a positive collaborator with a proactive approach to teamwork and communication
Be familiar with audio production tools and CMS platforms
Be aligned with SBS’s purpose, values and Charter
You should also bring:
A strong understanding and knowledge of national and international affairs
A curious mind with an interest in storytelling and developing innovative ways to reach and engage wider audiences.
News happens around the clock and you should be willing and able to undertake hours that may involve early mornings, evenings and weekends.
