Casual Graphics Designer

This role is classified as Level 2 role under SBS Australia's current Enterprise Agreement, offering $42 – $55 per hour (including casual loading). The successful applicant will be offered remuneration that is commensurate with their skills and experience and in alignment with this framework.

As a rostered shift worker, additional shift penalty payments may apply for work performed outside of ordinary hours, including weekends and public holidays, as per the SBS Enterprise Agreement (EA). SBS may also require you to work reasonable overtime, where overtime will be paid at applicable rates in accordance with the EA.

The Department 

The News and Current Affairs Graphics team is a dynamic, collaborative team that supports daily news broadcasts, online news and current affairs programs content creation.

We work alongside Journalists, Producers and Editors in the heart of our very busy newsroom. 

The Role 

We have an exciting full-time opportunity available to create design work for News and Current Affairs broadcast and digital platforms. The purpose of this role is to support the news and current affairs team to bring to audiences stand out graphics, including original graphic content for storytelling. You will collaborate with Producers / Journalists to produce dynamic stories with state-of-the-art graphic design that will engage and inform our audiences in a timely, contemporary way.   

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Collaborate with the Editorial team and Design Supervisor to deliver high-quality graphics for News and Current Affairs across all platforms.
  • Create compelling designs aligned with SBS’s brand and strategic direction, including for breaking news and quick-turnaround stories.
  • Ensure consistency with program branding (e.g., SBS World News, Dateline, Insight, The Feed).
  • Maintain and manage design assets and follow established workflows and archiving protocols.
  • Stay informed on current affairs and apply SBS’s editorial guidelines to all visual content.
  • Explore and incorporate industry innovations, including AR design techniques.
  • Support team development by sharing knowledge, training others, and contributing to special projects.
  • Produce dynamic global maps to visually enhance international and national news coverage.
  • Demonstrate resilience and professionalism when working under pressure or with sensitive content.

About you 

  • We are looking for someone who brings:
  • Proven experience in creating bold, complex animations, with a strong interest in news and current affairs.
  • Deep understanding of channel branding and style guides, with a keen eye on emerging visual trends.
  • Strong communicator with the ability to collaborate across teams, delegate tasks effectively, and support team training.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy to maintain audience trust and uphold the SBS brand.
  • Skilled in studio delivery and team-based workflows.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe After Effects and Photoshop; experience with CANVA, 3D animation, and Adobe Premiere Pro is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce both motion and static graphics in a professional setting.
  • Creative flair backed by a strong portfolio showcasing animation, typography, and information design.
  • Relevant design qualifications completed.
