Deputy News Editor - Digital

This role is classified as Level 4 role under SBS Australia's current Enterprise Agreement (with a base salary range of $96,483 - $106,688). The successful applicant will be offered remuneration that is commensurate with their skills and experience and in alignment with this framework. 

This role is classified as a shift worker. However, there will be a regular work pattern working shifts between Monday - Friday.  This is a hybrid role, available to work our of our Sydney or Melbourne office.

As a rostered shift worker, additional shift penalty payments may apply for work performed outside of ordinary hours, including weekends and public holidays, as per the SBS Enterprise Agreement (EA). SBS may also require you to work reasonable overtime, where overtime will be paid at applicable rates in accordance with the EA.

The Role 

We are looking for a dedicated and skilled Deputy News Editor, responsible for overseeing the daily output of the News Digital team, , as well as coaching and developing team members. 

Duties will include: 

  • Demonstrating excellent editorial ability and news judgement through a thorough knowledge of international and domestic news stories and events 

  • Providing guidance, support, and direction to the curation of the SBS News homepage, and overseeing the production of related articles, while using tools such as Adobe Analytics and Chartbeat in maximising content performance 

  • Managing the daily output of Digital Editors and Digital Journalists, in concert with the News Editor, and act as the final monitor to uphold all on-the-day content 

  • Delivering against the news digital strategy while ensuring coverage enhances the distinctive content of SBS, corresponds to the SBS News digital strategy, the SBS Charter and adhering to SBS values of balance and accuracy 

  • Leading daily editorial meetings and participating in other daily and weekly editorial and planning meetings as appropriate.  

  • Commissioning and assigning news stories through the day, providing guidance on angles to journalists, managing flow of content to sub-editors, and sub-edit articles when needed 

  • Using data and analytics to review content performance and utilise these insights, together with audience user needs in commissioning and editorial decision making, to deliver on KPIs 

  • Participating in digital strategy, planning, monitoring, evaluation, and other activities as required 

  • Supervising and managing direct reports, including regular feedback sessions and performance reviews 

  • Providing timely feedback to journalists and editors on story production and accuracy of copy 

  • Seeking sources beyond traditional for commissions, talent, and comment such as and including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, consistent with SBS’s commitment to the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 

  • Liaising with reporters and editors from all platforms to maximize their content opportunities for digital platforms 

About you 

  • A confident, resourceful and creative editor with a strong eye for detail, sound editorial judgement, and a keen sense of how stories are shaped, framed and presented to resonate with digital audiences 

  • Strong editorial judgement, with a focus on accuracy, rigorous fact-checking and high editorial standards 

  • An understanding of media law, flawless writing and subbing skills 

  • A commitment to maintaining our editorial integrity and maximising our publishing reach 

  • Knowledgeable about innovations in the digital storytelling space and data analytics 

  • Demonstrated newsroom leadership experience
