Digital Dateline Editor

This role is classified as Level 3 role under SBS Australia's current Enterprise Agreement (with a base salary range of $89,140 - $96,482). The successful applicant will be offered remuneration that is commensurate with their skills and experience and in alignment with this framework.

The Department 

As Australia's longest-running international current affairs program, Dateline brings compelling stories from around the globe to Australian audiences through its award-winning documentaries. This role is an exciting opportunity to sink your teeth into the daring stories and special characters Dateline covers; to bring them to digital audiences; commission, edit and oversee digital first video and articles as well as contribute original content; and help Dateline elevate and innovate it’s suite of digital content.  

The Role 

We are currently seeking a dynamic and creative individual with strong digital video and writing skills to be our Digital Editor for Dateline. You will work closely with Dateline’s broadcast team to commission and oversee the best content for digital platforms, with emphasis on creating and guiding digital first video content for YouTube, Instagram and other third party platforms as well as overseeing written articles. The digital editor champions Dateline content, seeking the best ways to engage with digital audiences.  

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Ensure the best digital content opportunities for each Dateline episode are explored and ensure all content is to high editorial and production standards

  • Commission and provide clear guidance for digital videos for producers to shoot on location or back at base, including workshopping angles, structure and scripts with the Dateline linear team

  • Commission and edit staff-written feature articles as well as write original feature articles, oversee article production and distribution

  • Explore new digital opportunities for the Dateline brand including developing new content streams for short and long form video

  • Manage Dateline’s Third-Party platform channels in conjunction with the Digital Current Affairs Social Producer, and ensure best practice for optimisation

About you 

We’re looking for someone who brings: 

  • Demonstrated editorial experience in digital journalism, with emphasis on digital video production 

  • A desire to innovate and stay on top of digital content trends 

  • Strong video storytelling and writing skills: for scripts, articles, headlines, social assets 

  • Demonstrated ability to edit articles and digital video scripts and oversee them from pitch to production with a strong level of autonomy  

  • A thorough knowledge of international affairs and ability to tell these stories to Australian audiences. 

  • Strong communication skills and eagerness to collaborate 

  • Video editing skills, including experience with Premiere Pro are highly desirable 

  • Strong understanding of third party platforms and video performance analytics
