Editing Lead and Trainer

At SBS we believe that entertainment can also be informative and educational, and we are committed to ensuring that the diversity of our organisation reflects the make-up of Australia. The SBS Access Services and Program Preparation Unit (ASPP) plays a vital part in this process. We ensure SBS content is accessible to all Australians by providing subtitles in English and in languages other than English (LOTE), as well as closed captioning and audio description services.

ASPP is seeking a full-time Editing Lead and Trainer to-

    • Contribute to the unit’s output by editing subtitles, translations and closed captions
    • Provide training (in WinCaps) to both permanent staff and contractors
    • Advise the organisation about the requirements and compatibility of software, tools and platforms necessary to ensure the correct display of captions and subtitles to broadcast standards (NB this does not require knowledge of any language other than English)
    • Have administrative oversight of an expanding contractor pool

    About the role:

The main tasks/responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:

    • Provide specialist advice to the unit and organisation regarding all aspects of subtitle production, integration and display, both on free-to-air channels and online
    • Develop and deliver all editing training, including initial and top-up training to both internal ASPP and external Contractor staff (at this time using WinCaps)
    • Engage and manage all Contractors, monitoring the quality and pace of submitted work to ensure that it meets SBS broadcast standards and deadlines
    • Work closely with ASPP Management and the Service Delivery Team to promote consultative and effective work practices across the unit

    About you:

The successful applicant will have significant knowledge of and experience using WinCaps software. Previous experience editing subtitles is desirable.

You will be a team player, able to work closely with the Editing Supervisor (who leads ASPP’s full time editing team) and the ASPP manager with regard to unit strategy and delivery. You will also work closely with ASPP’s Service Delivery team, who manage workflows and delivery for subtitling, captioning and audio description services at SBS.

You will have experience as a trainer, although not necessarily in relation to WinCaps. You will also have experience successfully leading a team.

Excellent English skills are essential, as are a proven ability to multi-task, prioritise workloads and work to tight deadlines.

At SBS we embrace difference and we welcome applications from people of all backgrounds including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People.

SBS also recognises that everyone is unique, that you might require some adjustments to ensure you have the best opportunity to apply and put your skills forward for consideration. If we can make some adjustments to the SBS recruitment/interview process to better enable you to shine, please contact and let us know.
