The Department

The SBS Access Services and Program Preparation unit (ASPP) plays a vital part in this process: we help to make SBS content accessible to all Australians by providing subtitles in English and in languages other than English (LOTE), as well as by providing closed captioning and audio description services. 

The Role

ASPP is seeking a full-time Editing Supervisor to supervise all members of ASPP’s Subtitle Editing Team, and carry out production tasks, editing subtitles, translations, closed captions and any other relevant texts to a quality appropriate to SBS’s needs.

Reporting into the Manager within our ASPP team, this role will see you:

  • Support the Editing Team, reviewing work and offering guidance to assist them in meeting SBS standards and ASPP requirements.
  • Work closely with ASPP Management and Service Delivery Team to promote consultative and effective work practices.
  • Edit subtitles, translations, closed captions and other relevant texts to ensure SBS content is accessible to our audience and meets broadcast standards and deadlines.
  • Contribute to the review and documentation of editing standards, policy, guidelines and workflows and related technologies to promote the consistency and efficiency of our products and services.
  • Make recommendations regarding program requirements or suitability for broadcast.
  • Meet the administrative requirements of the position, including those relating to place of work (homebased/at SBS), shifts and hours worked, and any necessary documentation as required
  • Train others in the unit and attend training as directed.
  • Examples of roles to which you could progress include Editing Lead and Trainer.
  • It is a requirement of this role that incumbents are vaccinated with at least two doses of an approved Covid-19 vaccination. We do however have a medical exemption process and we would be happy to discuss your application should this be applicable to you.

About you

  • Previous experience managing a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and provide team members with a clear sense of direction in a way which fosters a positive and high-functioning workplace.
  • Thorough understanding of the uses and functions of language and knowledge or appreciation of foreign languages.
  • Writing and research ability and good attention to detail.
  • Wide general knowledge, including of current affairs, history and social history, science and technology. A background in the humanities is desirable.
  • Experience in using standard computer software e.g. Microsoft Office, experience using WinCaps would be an advantage.
  • Ability to type to a suitable speed.
