The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced editor/journalist that focuses specifically on supervising original journalism and telling stories that matter.

We are looking for a dedicated and skilled Features Editor to commission, edit and oversee original feature articles and content for SBS News' Digital native and Third Party platforms. This is a full-time ongoing weekday role. 

In this role you will be: 

  • Commissioning, briefing and supervising original news feature articles for SBS News, including first-person led news-adjacent stories, deep dives, investigations, interactives and visualisations
  • Guiding journalists in the development of feature stories and angles, and supporting journalists to breaking new ground
  • Responsible for editorial guidance and leadership of feature articles and innovative feature storytelling for SBS News
  • Using data and analytics tools to help inform editorial choices  
  • Delivering against corporate strategy 

About you 

Ideally, you will be:

  • thorough, dedicated to storytelling and collegiate
  • an editor/journalist with demonstrated experience in news features for a major publication/outlet, including experience in planning, commissioning, and editing feature articles, including investigative features and first-person led stories
  • a confident and creative editor with a strong eye for detail, ability to provide constructive editorial feedback, workshop story ideas and provide guidance to journalists on writing audience-friendly features
  • a digital-first storyteller, with strong understanding of writing for a digital audience and SEO headlines
  • confident in your understanding of media law, excellent writing, subbing and headline crafting skills.  
  • committed to maintaining our editorial integrity and maximising our publishing reach

Ideally, you will have;  

  • A keen interest and understanding of national and international news, the ability to commission and edit content around a broad range of topics and tones, and a keen interest to develop storytelling in new and innovative ways to reach and engage wider audiences.  
  • A passion for providing news for all Australians 
  • A hunger to understand and share new developments and trends in journalism and digital media.  
  • Good energy to collaborate across the newsroom to create unique and distinctive content that meets deadlines. 
  • Open to the possibility to undertake occasional irregular hours.
