Managing Editor Digital, News and Current Affairs

About the opportunity 

This role is responsible for developing and implementing a digital growth strategy for SBS News and Current Affairs including audio, video and publishing across owned and third-party platforms and assisting with the digital product strategy. 

This role is a key leadership position in the SBS News and Current Affairs division (NACA) and oversees the editorial and distribution strategy for News and Current Affairs Digital including video, publishing, newsletters and audio. Some of the tasks include: 

  • Developing and leading an end-to-end digital strategy to deliver on SBS’s charter and purpose and SBS’s Audience First goals
  • In collaboration with the team, overseeing the day-to-day operations of NACA’s digital output, setting and maintaining the highest editorial and production standards 
  • Leading and inspiring NACA’s digital team, providing editorial and creative direction for the strategy, encouraging continuous improvement and innovation to deepen engagement with and grow audiences
  • Leading NACA’s third party strategy, development of and implementation of relevant agreements 
  • Advising the senior leadership team and broader division on the latest digital product innovations, emerging trends, content production, distribution and audience engagement, in consultation with direct reports 
  • Working collaboratively across NACA and SBS to ensure digital content aligns with NACA’s cross-platform strategy, and is relevant for an increasingly diverse Australian audience 

About you 

Critical to this role, we are looking for someone who is passionate about, understands and can celebrate the unique and inspiring storytelling of multicultural communities and First Nations Peoples. You will have a deep understanding of the SBS Charter and Purpose.  In addition, you will have: 

  • Demonstrated experience in people leadership with passion for coaching and mentoring staff and fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion 
  • Demonstrated experience commissioning and producing news and feature content for digital platforms, including articles, video and audio 
  • Demonstrated experience of using audience research and data to develop and implement a digital strategy
