The Role

Reporting to the Head of Payroll, Rostering and Compliance, the Senior Payroll Compliance and Controls Officer will be doing the following:

  • Conducting regular audits of payroll processes, with a special focus on areas involving manual calculations or manual adjustments. Identify discrepancies, inefficiencies, or non-compliance, and recommend corrective actions or improvements.
  • Implementing and enforcing strong payroll controls to prevent errors, fraud, and non-compliance. Regularly assess the risk landscape of payroll activities and develop strategies to mitigate identified risks.
    Ensuring that payroll procedures comply with relevant laws, regulations, company policies, and the Enterprise Agreement (EA).
  • Providing accurate interpretation of the Enterprise Agreement, company policies, and other relevant documents to ensure payroll is processed correctly and fairly, particularly in complex or unusual cases.
  • Proactively suggesting and supporting the implementation of process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce manual intervention, and ensure accuracy in payroll execution. Collaborate with other teams to automate processes where possible.
  • Supporting the internal reconciliation of payroll data, ensuring that all payroll-related accounts are accurate, complete, and reconciled on a timely basis. Assist with year-end reconciliation and auditing activities.
  • Providing guidance and training to payroll team members on compliance-related matters, policy interpretations, and internal controls. Help ensure that the payroll team is fully equipped to execute payroll accurately and compliantly.
  • Acting as a back up and support to the Payroll Manager and the wider Payroll Team

This role is classified as Level 5 business Support with a base salary range of $104,088 - $122, 966 under SBS Australia's current Enterprise Agreement. The successful applicant will be offered remuneration that is commensurate with their skills and experience and in alignment with this framework.

About you

  •  3+ years in payroll compliance, auditing, or controls, preferably in a large or complex payroll environment.
  • Strong understanding of payroll policies, the Fair Work Act, and other relevant legislation. Experience with Enterprise Agreements is preferred.
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong analytical abilities, and the ability to identify and resolve payroll discrepancies.
  • Experience with payroll systems and Excel.  Knowledge of process automation is an advantage.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience). Payroll or accounting certifications will be regarded favourably
  • Knowledge or experience of the Aurion Payroll platform would be an advantage but is not essential.
